National Black Cat Day: Celebrating Black Cats on 27 October

Every year on 27 October, National Black Cat Day shines a light on black and black-and-white cats and celebrates everything that makes them special.

The campaign was started by Cats Protection in 2011 to raise awareness and encourage people to consider adopting cats of every colour.

Why does National Black Cat Day exist?

When the campaign began, Cats Protection reported that black and black-and-white cats were spending an average of seven days longer in its care than cats of other colours. The charity now says this gap has improved, showing how awareness campaigns can make a positive difference.

Why are black cats sometimes overlooked?

Old superstitions

Black cats have been linked to different traditions and superstitions over the years. In parts of Britain they are associated with good luck, while other stories portray them less kindly. Their colour says nothing about their personality or suitability as a companion.

Photographs do not always do them justice

Dark fur can be difficult to photograph in poor lighting, and a hurried look at an adoption profile may not convey an individual cat’s character. Getting to know a cat is a much better guide than a photograph alone.

Every cat deserves to be seen as an individual

Whether playful, quiet, affectionate or independent, every cat has its own personality. Rescue organisations can help match prospective owners with an animal suited to their home and circumstances.

How can you celebrate National Black Cat Day?

  • Share a story: show off your own black cat and encourage others to celebrate theirs.
  • Consider adopting: if you are ready for a pet, speak to a reputable rescue organisation and meet cats based on their individual needs.
  • Support rescue work: donations, volunteering and sharing adoption profiles can all help.
  • Plan for long-term care: think about food, enrichment, routine vet visits and unexpected veterinary costs before adopting.

At The Pet Protection Fund, we believe the bond between pets and their owners is worth protecting. National Black Cat Day is a lovely reminder that every animal deserves the opportunity to be loved and cared for.
